"Ultimate Guide to Fly Fishing for Cutthroat Trout: Where to Find Them & How to Catch Them"

Discover the Habitat of Cutthroat Trout
Ever wondered where you can find the elusive Cutthroat Trout? This interactive map highlights global observations of Oncorhynchus clarkii, revealing their preferred continents, countries, and waterways.

Prime Locations for Fly Fishing Cutthroat Trout
Recognizable by their striking red slash marks, Cutthroat Trout thrive in the cold, pristine waters of the Western United States. These fish owe their existence to the glacial retreats of the last Ice Age, which carved out their ideal habitats in free-flowing streams and alpine lakes.

When and Where to Spot Them at Their Best
Summer spawn transforms Cutthroat Trout into a spectacle of vibrant colors—fiery-red throats and shimmering olive-to-gold hues. They’re abundant from California to New Mexico, with hotspots in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho.

Mastering the Art of Fly Fishing for Cutthroat
A weight-forward floating line is your go-to setup, with sinking leaders for deeper feeders. Pro tip: Bring extra leader material—rocky riverbeds are notorious for causing frayed lines.

Patience is Key
Much like Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat can be picky eaters. Focus on oxygen-rich deeper pools below rapids or the shallow edges of calm waters for the best chances.

Top Fly Patterns to Lure Cutthroat Trout
Their diet includes insects, small fish, and crustaceans, so standard trout flies work wonders. Dry flies like the Elk Hair Caddis, CDC, and Blue Winged Olive are excellent, while nymphs such as the Pheasant Tail and Hare’s Ear rarely disappoint.

When They’re on the Hunt but Not Surfacing
If trout are chasing but not rising, switch to small streamers like the Mickey Finn or Woolly Bugger to trigger strikes.

This guide ensures you’re equipped with everything needed to target—and land—these stunning fish. Happy fishing!

"Fly Fishing Paradise: Conquering the Wild Waters of Austria’s Lech River"

Discover a Hidden Alpine Gem
Tucked deep within the breathtaking Alps flows the Lech River, a fly fisher’s dream destination. This pristine waterway, with its rushing currents and deep pools, offers a secluded paradise surrounded by towering pine forests. Alternating between gentle meanders and roaring rapids, the river’s natural weirs and cascades create an angler’s playground. To truly master these waters, hiring a seasoned guide like Thomas—who knows every gorge and pool—is a game-changer.

The Elusive Fish of the Lech
Patience and precision are key when fishing these waters. With only six day passes issued for the 24 km stretch, the fish here are unaccustomed to heavy pressure, making them highly sensitive to abrupt movements. But the reward is immense—once you outsmart one of these wild fighters, you’ll feel the electrifying power of a hooked grayling or trout as it battles against your line. Since their introduction in 1996, grayling have thrived in these high-altitude waters, growing impressively large.

Gear Up for Success
To tackle the Lech’s challenging conditions, opt for short-sectioned 8 to 9-foot rods (AFTMA class 5-6) paired with dry lines (WF) and leaders ranging from 0.12mm to 0.18mm. Lightweight waders, sturdy shoes, and a backpack with spare clothes are essential—especially if an unexpected swim occurs. Don’t forget a landing net, a compact wading vest, polarized glasses, and layers for chilly mornings. At 1,450 meters, the sun can be intense, so sunscreen is a must.

Unlock the Lech’s Secrets
For the ultimate experience, book a guided trip with a local expert and stock up on hand-tied flies designed for these waters.

Target the Lech’s Prized Species

"From Chef to Fly Fishing Guru: My Journey with FLYTASTIC"

A Lifelong Passion for Fishing
From an early age, I was captivated by the art of fishing—mastering intricate knots blindfolded and discovering the thrill of fly fishing by 14. Even as I navigated secondary school and trained as a chef in Appenzell, my love for the sport never faded. After my culinary career, I found joy in bartending and connecting with people, but it also sparked a deeper quest for purpose.

At the Crossroads of Passion and Profession

"From Chef to Fly Fishing Guru: My Journey with FLYTASTIC"

In 2015, armed with a vocational diploma and culinary apprenticeship, I embarked on hotel management studies. But it was a life-changing 2017 summer internship in Canada—working as a "Lodge Assistant Manager" at a fishing lodge—that cemented my devotion to fishing. Returning to Switzerland, I grappled with a pressing question: Was this the career path I truly wanted? Doubts about my studies grew louder.

Answering the Call of the Wild
By spring 2020, as I completed my studies and the COVID-19 lockdown unfolded, I seized the opportunity to dive headfirst into fly fishing. I realized my dream wasn’t just to fish—it was to share my passion, knowledge, and culinary flair with others. This epiphany led me to launch FLYTASTIC, a free website where I documented my adventures and insights, inviting others to join me in nature’s embrace.

Transforming Passion into Purpose
In the summer of 2021, I took the leap and made FLYTASTIC my profession. Through workshops, I now teach fly fishing techniques, share my deep understanding of aquatic ecosystems, and instill a reverence for nature. My mission? To inspire fellow anglers and elevate their fishing experiences. After all, life’s too short not to pursue what you love—and for me, that’s fly fishing.
